Write Down the Reading in Your Own Words
After you think you know what the reading is about, close the book, get out a piece of paper and write down the reading in your own words as if you were the author. Do not try to memorize it; just understand it so you can meaningfully convey the reading to others. If you cannot do this, go back and find out more about the passage. If you do not understand the reading yourself, you will not be able to proclaim it with conviction and credibility.
